The Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® Methods are complementary exercise methods. Both methods were developed by Juliu Horvath, an ethnic Hungarian, and professional dancer from Romania. Horvath suffered a series of debilitating injuries during his dance career and began developing what are now known as the Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® Methods as a way to heal himself and regain his strength and agility.
Gyrotonic® exercises are performed on custom-designed Gyrotonic® equipment, whereas Gyrokinesis® exercises are performed on a mat and chair. Both Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® exercise sequences are composed of spiraling, circular movements, which flow together seamlessly in rhythmic repetitions with corresponding breathing patterns. Each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression. These carefully crafted sequences create balance, agility, strength and flexibility.
Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® method differs from conventional or popular methods found in fitness or yoga classes, including the popular Pilates method. (Note: Gyrotonic® is not related to Pilates).
The difference is in the name itself, as ‘gyro’ refers to three dimensional actions, unlike fitness or strength training which focuses on actions that move back and forth through the joints.
In many of the exercises in the method, a sequence of tri-planal motions are learned, where the limbs and core integrate to create flowing circular moments with rhythm and momentum.
Because this gathers effort through many interacting muscle groups, the connective tissues that surround the muscles and tendons facilitate movements with ease and grace.
The body’s fascia is then nourished and hydrated, bringing about a youthful vitality that continues into everyday life. We learn ‘movement’ in a session, as opposed to positions that the body transfers to, so as to feel the energizing effect of harmonizing your body as a whole in rhythmic motion.
The first 5-10 sessions give you a repertoire of how the Gyrotonic® method applies to your personal goals.
It takes time to become acquainted with this unique system, as even experienced movement teachers all find the workouts innovative and authentic.
You will notice a more balanced ease after the first visit and as the progress continues you will feel stronger, more flexible, release from stored tensions, and a bit taller!
Gyrokinesis® is a moving “yoga” which has been offered at my studio since 2003. I am a certified instructor through Gyrotonic® Headquarters and I improvise each session with a large vocabulary of sequences done both on a stool and standing. Each class utilizes the same principles but in various sequences, keeping you engaged.
As you follow along with me, my voiced cues help you through the session. Each class utilizes the similar principles I have woven together from the Gyrokinesis® method supported by my 30+ years as a Somatic movement therapist. My interest for you is to understand how to create movement that supports your skeleton with healthy alignment. The exercises stimulate hydration throughout the body’s fascia, creating integration and flexibility.
Megan is an incredibly knowledgeable and inspiring teacher. It is such a gift that she is offering these classes to us during this difficult time. I feel more balanced and comfortable in my body, stronger physically and more relaxed mentally. I think we all feel connected and supported as we work together online under her skillful, creative and effective guidance. Being home and isolated is hard and this excellent workout, shared with others, is just what I need to help me get through. And for a bonus, the classes are thoroughly enjoyable!”
The session promotes flexibility and integration throughout your body, focused on breathing through flowing full body sequences. You’ll feel more relaxed and focused, and better equipped to handle the stresses of everyday life.
Wear comfortable clothes, no shoes required. We start with a stool or armless chair with a space about 5-6 feet open in front of you.
